This subject builds on and brings together the concepts introduced in earlier subjects such as 48610 Introduction to Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering, 48620 Fundamentals of Mechanical Engineering, Design One — Drawing and Materials and 48331 Mechanics of Solids. Engineering design provides the link between engineering science and practice. Mechanical Design 2 is the second of three explicitly titled engineering design subjects, but the treatment in the earlier subjects mentioned above also have a design focus. Topics covered here include design methodology, design rules for machine elements, application and uses of electrical equipment and processes and aspects of engineering knowledge.

Assessment: Machine design assignment (40 per cent), shaft design (15 per cent), element choice and design (30 per cent) and optimisation (15 per cent).
