This subject aims to introduce students to the foundations of Signal Theory for engineers practising in the Information and Communications Technology areas. Signals are the representation of information within systems. As such, an appreciation of signal theory forms the basis for understanding, analysis and design of systems. This subject introduces some of the basic concepts of signal theory in a practical context.
After completing this subject, students are able to:
- model a moderately complex system in terms of its subsystems and the signals that interconnect them
- analyse systems models and implement them in Matlab
- move freely between the time-domain and the frequency-domain representations of signals and systems, and
- analyse, design and implement a range of simple linear systems.
Assessment: Typically assessment for this subject involves a series of laboratory exercises, individual assessment tasks and examination.
