This subject provides an introduction to the triple bottom line of environmental, economic and social sustainability in urban development, particularly in relation to ecologically sustainable development. The concepts of eco-footprints and eco-catchments are discussed as benchmarks for environmental sustainability. Physical constraints on development including soil, hydrology and ecology are introduced. The causes and urban effects of global warming are analysed. The nature of social sustainability and sustainable urban development are covered, including sustainable building and the BASIX environmental rating method for building development, sustainable transport, and sustainable water and energy use.
