11515 Architectural Design: Computational Media
12cpPostgraduate
This subject aims to further architectural design skills through the integration of a specific research agenda. The research agenda is in the area of computational media techniques and technologies and their impact on architectural design and production. This studio critically explores the impact of existing and emerging digital media and software, for advanced digital visualisation, simulation and communication as well as associated theories and methods on the conceptualisation and development of architecture. Computational media is broadly defined across three categories: digital techniques for visualisation; data collection and analysis; and generative information systems. These may specifically encompass existing and newly emerging animation, modelling and simulation platforms, emersive and augmented visualisations, information gathering, data capturing and analysis programs, GIS, GPS, digital laser scanning, mobile computing platforms and devices, collective or autonomous authoring systems etc, that may be drawn from within architecture as well as from other disciplines. Computational media, techniques and theories are investigated as potential design generators through individual and group-based design projects.
The subject also enhances a critical understanding of architecture as both a discipline with an existing body of knowledge and a set of practices that continuously challenge and add to that body of knowledge. The subject requires the testing of ideas and modes of practising in architectural design, and the production of design and/or research proposals that accurately and persuasively convey the most relevant ideas and practices.
