11508 Architectural Design: Disciplinary Transformations

12cp
Postgraduate

This subject aims to further architectural design skills through the integration of a specific research agenda that is tested through project-based speculations. The research agenda is focused on exchange between architecture and other creative disciplines such as literature, music, the visual arts, performance, cooking, cinema, dance, design, etc. The subject explores the design potential of techniques and exemplars from other creative practices. The subject is also concerned with the architectural potential of cross-overs in media. Issues of notation, translation and representation are central to the field of creative exchange and inter-disciplinarity and are tested through focused experiments carried out individually and in teams. Collaborative projects with students and practitioners from outside architecture may also be tested in this subject.

The subject also enhances a critical understanding of architecture as both a discipline with an existing body of knowledge and a set of practices that continuously challenge and add to that body of knowledge. The subject requires the testing of ideas and modes of practising in architectural design, and the production of design proposals that accurately and persuasively convey the most relevant ideas and practices.
