023523 Sociology of Education

6cp
Undergraduate

This subject supports the development of an understanding of the nature of social relationships and arrangements as an important context of schooling. The learning activities encourage students to develop a sociological imagination that sees beyond the familiarity of daily life in order to look at it anew, critically and analytically. A range of social theories is examined and applied to understanding how social and economic characteristics influence the educational outcomes of different social groups. The direction of social change and the nature of globalisation are also studied, along with the implications of these for schools.
