013117 Theory and Practice of Literacy

6cp
Postgraduate

This subject aims to provide students with advanced knowledge and skills in teaching literacy in a variety of contexts, and with theoretical frameworks for exploring, evaluating and critiquing a range of pedagogic practices and approaches to literacy teaching and learning. These theoretical frameworks provide reference points for exploring the nature of literate language, the role of literacy in learning, pathways and processes in literacy development in schools and adult contexts, and more generally the sociology of literacy pedagogy. The subject aims to enable students to engage in an informed way in current debates and discussions around literacy in the public domain. In practical terms students engage with the enactment of different pedagogies in teaching and learning materials and in teacher-learner interactions.
