Handbook description

This subject introduces legal principles and laws as they relate to leisure, sport and tourism activity and its management. It covers law as it affects the leisure participant, the tourist and the sportsperson, the leisure professional, the tourism manager and the sports administrator.

Subject objectives/outcomes

On successful completion of this subject students should be able to:

  1. Discuss legal principles and statutes relevant to the leisure, tourism or sports professional manager or administrator.
  2. Recognise their legal responsibilities and liabilities.
  3. Understand the legal process, i.e. the court system; law making; and case management; implementation and resolution.
  4. Identify legal obligations in management contexts.
  5. Describe and apply the function of law in our leisure, sport and tourism behaviour.

Contribution to graduate profile

This is a core subject in the BM in Leisure, BM in Tourism and the BA in Sport and Exercise Management programs. It is considered critical that responsible management and professional personnel have knowledge of relevant legal responsibilities and duties. This subject provides students with a basic understanding of the legal system and laws pertinent to the providers of services in leisure, tourism, sport and exercise management. It therefore provides the legal context in which they will operate in their professional careers.

Teaching and learning strategies

  • Risk minimisation: insurance; incorporation; risk management
  • Tourism and travel - conditions in contracts; consumer protection; hotel and accommodation law; the travel agents act
  • Sport and the law: incorporation of associations; violence in sport
  • Consumer Protection
  • Loss of enjoyment - class actions
  • Ethics.
