Handbook description

This subject provides the opportunity to develop specific project-based vocational or theoretical knowledge in an area of personal interest. It is open to students who have attained a Credit average or above and who have demonstrated a capacity to engage in self-directed work.

Subject objectives/outcomes

On successful completion of this subject students should be able to:

  1. Design a project or program of study to provide answers to a specific leisure research question.
  2. Undertake self directed applied or theoretical research.
  3. Produce a report or journal article that is of publishable quality.

Contribution to graduate profile

This elective subject allows self-directed students to develop their own program of study based on a defined research project. As such it allows students to develop specific expertise in a chosen vocational or academic area within the leisure field. It is a recommended subject for students contemplating Honours study. The subject provides students the freedom to define their own study agenda and pursue this with the support of a relevant academic staff supervisor.

Teaching and learning strategies

This subject is an independent research project and as such the student is assigned to a subject supervisor for the semester. It is expected that the student and academic supervisor will meet on a weekly basis. Content for this subject will be supported by UTSOnline.

Content

  • Subject content will be established prior to the commencement of semester through a 'learning contract'. This contract will be based on a formal written proposal submitted to the Undergraduate Course Director by a student wishing to undertake this subject, prior to the end of the semester immediately preceding that in which the subject is proposed to be undertaken
  • This proposal will include: justification for undertaking the subject; project objectives; a preliminary outline of the work program; a preliminary reading and resource list
  • Students should have identified an appropriate staff supervisor and discussed the project before preparing their submission
  • The student will also present a final seminar on their project which will be scheduled during the last four weeks of the semester in which the subject is undertaken. An invitation to this seminar may be extended to staff and students of the University and to any persons from outside the University who may have a special interest in the topic. The student may wish to consider feedback from this seminar in revising their final submission

Assessment

Report/Essay (Individual)100%
This addresses objectives 1-3.

Report topics are updated each year to represent current issues in leisure studies. To ensure security of assessment, choice in essay topics encourages motivation in independent work. Further, a statement of independent work is included on every assignment cover sheet.
