Handbook description

The subject conceptually frames the symbiotic relationship of sport and tourism and the use of sport as a touristic endeavour. Students develop an understanding of management issues related to two of the world's largest and fastest growing industries. The interplay between sport tourism and the economy, sociocultural dynamics, the environment, urban development, and public policy is investigated. Cultural variations in the way sport tourism is administered in countries around the world are explored. Current trends, case studies and future directions are also examined.

Subject objectives/outcomes

On successful completion of this subject students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the main components of sport tourism in both local and global contexts.
  2. Analyse the economic, social and cultural impacts of sport tourism.
  3. Critically examine facets of the management of sport tourism.

Contribution to graduate profile

This subject is an elective for undergraduate students in the BM in Leisure, BA in Sport and Exercise Management and BM in Tourism. It is also relevant to students undertaking majors or sub-majors in Leisure, Sport or Tourism. The subject provides a theoretical overview of the relationship between sport and tourism; the practical economic, sociocultural, and environmental implications and consequences of sport tourism interactions; and organisational structures and management techniques used in sport tourism delivery systems. Drawing together the literature on sport and tourism the subject helps students to better understand the sport tourism product and its various manifestations.

This assessment element will be secure through a combination of continual updating of assessment across semesters, multiple topic choice within semesters and/or plagiarism detection software. Security of assessment is further ensured with case study and debate topics being updated each year and choice in essay topics encouraging motivation in independent work. Further, a statement of independent work is included on every assignment cover sheet.
