Handbook description

The subject introduces students to the theoretical considerations underpinning the liability and property insurance processes, particularly directing attention to the development of an understanding of the contemporary contextual issues which may impact upon the viability of these risk treatment strategies.

Subject objectives/outcomes

On successful completion of this subject students should be able to:

  1. An understanding of the Liability and Property Insurance processes and the underpinning theoretical considerations supporting this process.
  2. An understanding of the characteristics and processes associated with the principal forms of Liability and Property Insurance and the processes whereby the appropriate form of Liability or Property Insurance cover is identified to address a specific risk profile.
  3. An understanding of the contemporary issues impacting upon the Liability and Property Insurance processes and the extent to which there is a structuring influence of these issues upon the effectiveness of Liability and Property Insurance as available risk treatment strategies.

Contribution to graduate profile

This subject contributes to the degree by exposing students to the core principles of liability and property insurance and the use of these risk management strategies in the management of these fundamental risk exposure areas.

Teaching and learning strategies

The subject will be taught using a combination of lectures and workshops. These classes will be supplemented with both printed and electronic learning materials and resources. The UTS web-based communication tool (Blackboard Course Information) will be used to share information and encourage interaction between staff and students. Students will also use appropriate computer software such as spreadsheets and word processors to complete assigned tasks.

  • Property Insurance Underwriting, Portfolio and claims management
  • Property Insurance Underwriting Challenges and Regulatory developments

Assessment

Mid Semester exam 35%
The mid semester exam is designed to assess students' understanding of the theories and concepts. Addresses objectives 1 and 2.
Final Exam 65%
This exam, consisting of essay style questions, will test students' understanding of the theory and their ability to apply the theory to contemporary liability and property decision making processes. Addresses objectives 1-3.

To pass the subject, students must achieve at least 50% of the final overall grade.
