This subject develops an understanding of the processes that structure marine communities and support marine mammal populations. Problem-based learning techniques are used to elucidate interactions between the animals and plants in marine estuarine communities. Special attention is paid to local rocky reef communities, soft-sediment communities and Australian marine mammals. This subject is an integration of lectures, field work and marine mammal observation. It complements other subjects which focus on fish, coral reef ecosystems, marine primary producers and marine geosciences. Experimental work is conducted in the field on a seven-day excursion.
