This subject addresses the regulation of the telecommunications industry and various elements of it, including access, competition and universal service obligations both in Australia and overseas. In addition, the convergence of the telecommunications industry and the technology trends are also examined. In Australia particularly, the subject considers the regulation of the telecommunications industry under the Trade Practices Act and compares the regulation of telecommunications with the regulation of other industries.

This subject aims to form a foundation for the understanding and evaluation of the manner in which telecommunications is regulated in Australia and some overseas jurisdictions. It provides legal knowledge essential for persons seeking to become involved in the provision of telecommunication and related services. The contents of the subject contributes to the understanding of telecommunications regulation as well as seeking to stimulate a broader interest in regulation, technological evolution, policy making in telecommunications and investment issues.
