Students in this subject are introduced to the ethical responsibilities of legal practitioners under case law, the Professional Conduct Rules, the Legal Professional Act 2004 (NSW) and Legal Profession Regulations 2005 (NSW). Topics include retainers and liens, duties to the court and duties to the client, relations with third parties and discipline. Students develop their own framework for the resolution of ethical dilemmas by exploring the application of lawyers' ethical responsibilities to workshop problem scenarios and by keeping a reflective journal.
Assessment: Assignment (20 per cent), journal (20 per cent), examination (60 per cent).
