This subject covers identification of laboratory hazards and prevention; roles of government organisations: Australian Safety and Compensation Council, WorkCover, Environmental Protection Authority, National Industrial Chemicals Notification and Assessment Scheme and Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority; toxic effects of chemicals: carcinogens, mutagens and teratogens, sensitisers; exposure to chemicals, local and systemic reactions, acute and chronic toxicity; classification of dangerous goods: ADG class code and class labels; flammability limits: flammable liquids and solids; fire safety and fire prevention; precautionary labels and material safety data sheets; conducting risk assessments; NSW Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Regulations; safe storage of chemicals; safe handling of corrosives, oxidisers and explosives; class 6 poisons: scheduling, NSW Poisons and Therapeutic Goods Act; compressed gases: classification, hazards, storage and safe handling; cryogens and safe handling; personal protective equipment: respiratory, eye, head and face, and hand protection; workplace atmospheric monitoring; waste: safe handling of chemical, biological and microbiological waste.
