Students completing this subject gain a solid understanding of the fundamental concepts embodied in communication protocols. They also gain skills and knowledge in the analysis of protocols, leading to an appreciation of design issues. The main focus of the subject is on TCP/IP and LAN protocols. There are six laboratory sessions which cover LAN protocols, IP, TCP and UDP, routing, supporting protocols (DHCP, SNMP, DNS) and application protocols (HTTP, SMB).
Assessment: Quizzes (15 per cent), laboratory reports (30 per cent), examination (55 per cent).
