This subject presents recent advances that have enhanced the role of timber as a versatile renewable resource with a wide range of applications in engineered structures. It familiarises students with the structural behaviour of engineering wood products, timber and timber-based manufactured products to facilitate the choice of materials, design, construction and maintenance procedures to produce cost-effective, durable and aesthetically pleasing structures. Quality control and reliability issues form an important focus. Particular requirements of residential large-span industrial structures (including connection design), and multi-storey residential and / or commercial buildings, and the use of the limit-states version of AS1720, are addressed.
Assessment: Assignments / Design Projects (80 per cent), final quiz (20 per cent).
