This subject covers a number of widely used tools and methods in the solution of boundary value problems that arise in mathematical physics, and in particular in the study of electromagnetic optics/photonics and wave theory. Particular topics include: boundary value problems; eigenvalue problems; Sturm-Liouville problems; degeneracy; eigenfunctions and the variational principle; completeness, comparison of eigenfunction expansions with Fourier Series; eigenfunctions for the Helmholtz and Schroedinger equations; discrete and continuous eigenvalues; Green's function methods, Green's theorem, Helmholtz equation; solution of inhomogeneous equations; Green's functions and eigenfunctions; reciprocity; complex variables; boundary value problems for harmonic functions; mathematical and physical applications; conformal mapping.
