The management of health and aged care services is increasing in complexity for a wide range of factors including increased level of accountability, greater transparency in the operations of services, consolidation of service providers and the increasing cost of health and aged care.
This course is developed to prepare new, aspiring, middle and senior health managers to plan, manage and direct health and aged care services. It is designed for current and aspiring health services managers and for those with a clinical and non-clinical background.
The curriculum is based on the core competancies identified for health services managers and is designed to provide students with the level of knowledge and managerial skill they need for a career in health and aged care services management. Successful completion of this degree broadens employment opportunities in health, aged and community care sectors.
Graduates of this program have a unique blend of health-focused management and business skills. Career options include positions in hospitals, primary care, community care, aged care services, other health care institutions, private and non-government organisations and within government service.
Applicants require an Australian Bachelor's degree or equivalent. Applicants who do not have an undergraduate degree but who do have extensive relevant work experience in a health or human services field and can demonstrate the capacity to undertake tertiary study may also be considered eligible.
Applicants must have had at least one year's full-time work experience in a professional or skilled role in a medium to large organisation, preferably with a focus on health or human services.
The course is offered on a one-and-a-half-year full-time, or three-year part-time basis.
Students must complete a total of 72 credit points, comprising 10 compulsory subjects (seven subjects offered by the Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery and Health and three subjects offered by the Faculty of Business) and two elective subjects. These electives may be selected from any postgraduate subject on offer within UTS. A list of recommended electives is provided in CBK90544. Students who wish to undertake an elective subject that is not listed should seek advice from the Faculty.
