Centre for Research in Learning and Change

The Faculty of Education has a well-established and internationally recognised reputation for research that focuses on the complex and multifaceted relationship between learning and change. Our lead researchers are successful in winning competitive research funding from government, industry, organisations and communities, and are committed to collaborative approaches to their investigations. The research projects are outcomes based and research outputs are published widely. The researchers have extensive experience working in partnership with various professional fields and organisations. Our research students come from a variety of professional communities, are encouraged to be active members of the Faculty research community and are integral to the success of our research activities and profile.

The Faculty research centre is organised around two research clusters (Changing Practices and Designs for Learning) led by internationally recognised senior researchers. Under the unifying theme of researching learning and change these groupings reflect the research achievements and expertise of our researchers.

Changing Practices

The focus of the Changing Practices cluster is researching practice as it occurs in many different settings – in work and the professions, in education and in social and cultural settings – and the ways in which practice is changing. Our research involves investigating issues in the areas of:

  • language, communication and cultural change
  • learning and workplace and organisational change
  • learning and change in professional education
  • learning and change in communities.

Designs for Learning

The focus of the Designs for Learning cluster is the mediation of learning – the designs, interactions and interventions, and the different contexts, that shape learning. Our research involves investigating the ways in which theory and practice inform contemporary issues in the areas of:

  • teacher professional formation
  • language mediated learning
  • learning in the digital generations.
