Overview

This course is designed for nurses aspiring to management positions, as well as for those already holding such positions who wish to enhance their professional practice through formal study.

Course aims

The broad aims of the course are for students to be able to:

• explore and analyse the effects of changes in health care on their work role and environment
• effectively manage a nursing unit or division and its staff
• provide quality nursing care and staff leadership
• enhance interpersonal and organisational skills
• analyse the range of revenue sources available to governments for health care, and
• develop the skills and ability needed to promote an organisational culture that plans effectively for change.

Career options

The course covers all facets of modern nursing management. Career options include positions in the hospital setting and in other professional areas. The enhanced interpersonal and organisational skills graduates acquire in this course enable them to effectively manage a nursing unit or division and provide nursing care and staff leadership.

Additional admission requirements

Applicants should be registered nurses with an Australian Bachelor's degree in nursing or an equivalent tertiary qualification. Registered nurses who do not have an undergraduate diploma or degree but do have recent relevant work experience and can demonstrate the capacity to undertake tertiary study may also be considered eligible.

Applicants are normally expected to have concurrent employment in their area of specialty and at least one year's full-time professional employment in nursing is desirable.

Course duration and attendance

The Graduate Certificate in Nursing Management is offered on a one-year, part-time basis.

Course structure

Students must complete a total of 24 credit points of study, comprising four specified nursing subjects.
