This subject is designed to provide students who have no prior knowledge of the Italian language with basic reading, listening, speaking and writing skills in Italian. It is also intended to introduce students to general language learning strategies and some sociocultural aspects of Italian language use. The topics covered are related to everyday experiences, leisure, personal identities and relationships. Upon successful completion of this subject, students are able to understand familiar Italian words and very basic phrases concerning themselves, their families and immediate surroundings, in simple written texts, as well as in slowly and clearly pronounced spoken language. They are also able to interact in a simple way with an Italian speaker, write short, simple notes, messages or postcards and fill in forms with personal details, and understand and appreciate aspects of Italian culture.
Assessment: This subject has a combination of continuous assessment and final examinations for speaking, listening, reading and writing. Further details are available in the subject outline, distributed in class during the first week of teaching.
