This subject is designed to provide students who have successfully completed Japanese 7 or its equivalent, with a higher level of communicative and cultural competence. It is designed to introduce students to research methodologies using Japanese. Throughout the subject, students are expected to actively engage in academic reading and writing and participate in classroom discussions. Students further develop the linguistic and cultural awareness skills required to engage appropriately in a range of formal and informal discussions at the social, academic and professional level. Students are also expected to demonstrate the development of skills required to undertake research in Japanese. In terms of literacy development, students are expected to have increased their pace of reading as a result of regular and habitual reading, and to be able to write and recognise an increasing number of kanji as required for specific academic tasks.

Assessment: This subject has a combination of continuous assessment and final examinations for speaking, listening, reading and writing. Further details are available in the subject outline distributed in class during the first week of teaching.
