Requisite(s): 97106 Chinese Language and Culture 6
This subject is designed for students who have successfully completed Chinese 6 or who have a working knowledge of Chinese characters as well as communicative competence in a dialect other than Modern Standard Chinese (MSC) or who are competent in oral communication with MSC but have less knowledge of characters. It develops both the students' oral and written communicative competence to meet their needs in social and professional interactions where MSC is used. Students acquire a general basis in pronunciation with a working knowledge of Pinyin. They learn to communicate orally in a range of social situations and generate discussion on contemporary social issues. They also learn to understand radio, TV programs and films at native speed; read traditional and simplified written forms of Chinese characters; and develop research skills and write reports or essays of about 2,000 characters.
Assessment: This subject has a combination of continuous assessment and final examinations for speaking, listening, reading and writing. Further details are available in the subject outline distributed in class during the first week of teaching.
