This subject enables students to further explore and understand the impact of altered disease processes and the subsequent management strategies used in acute illness. The focus of the subject is patients who have complex pathologies requiring hospitalisation for medical and surgical treatment and management. Students have the opportunities to be involved in the delivery of nursing care in acute care settings to explore and understand the inter-relationships between the pathophysiological and psychological processes involved in health breakdown. The framework of the subject incorporates the impact of acute health alterations, hospitalisation and ageing.
