91151 Plants, People and the Environment

6cp

This subject introduces students to plant biology by exploring different aspects of plants in the context of both human societies and natural environments. The structure and function of plant parts are studied in relation to plant foods and Australian plants, primarily those of the Sydney region. Agriculture and its origins are examined, as is the impact of the introduction of agriculture on the Australian environment. The subject also considers other commercial products obtained from plants (e.g. beverages and wood) and ways in which plants affect human health (e.g. medicinal and psychoactive plants). Plants in Australian environments are studied, including changes over time. Current research in plant biology is discussed to illustrate the ongoing changes in our relationships with plants and plant development for future uses. Laboratory classes complement lecture topics and field trips explore plants in different contexts. Students also learn different techniques of plant propagation, primarily using materials relevant to revegetation and landscaping.
