This subject covers the following topics: instruction in the interpretation and diagnosis, at the light microscope level, of cell samples from a variety of anatomical sites; morphologic features of cells in normal states, effects of inflammation, physiologic patterns, hormonal effects, changes due to specific organisms and viruses, premalignant and malignant conditions and the effects of treatments on cell morphology and smear patterns; instruction on cell samples from the female genital tract, respiratory tract, alimentary tract, urinary tract, serous cavities, central nervous system, breast and thyroid with emphasis on fine needle aspiration samples; principles and procedures of specimen collection, preparation and staining, reporting methodology and laboratory procedures. Epidemiologic and aetiologic factors in premalignant and malignant diseases, and special procedures which complement cytopathologic diagnosis, are also included.
