This is a subject recommended for students wishing to undertake a career in research. It offers the opportunity to complete a short supervised project, including a literature survey and some data collection and analysis, in one of the areas of departmental expertise.

Students should approach potential supervisors about project availability in the first instance. Before enrolment can be approved, the student or supervisor must provide the Head of Department with a short written project proposal, including assessment criteria and, where the project involves laboratory or field work, a completed risk assessment form. Students enrolling in this subject are normally expected to include it as part of a part-time or full-time study pattern, and the project proposal must take account of these other commitments. Normally, a weighted average mark of 75 per cent or more is required for approval to enrol in this subject.
