88406 Textiles: Dye Methods
6cpUndergraduate
In this subject students explore the field of dyed textiles and gain a knowledge of specific dyes for different fibre types. The subject encourages experimentation with a range of commercial dyes and an exploration of some of the most ancient forms of dyestuff and mordants, such as alum, tannin and metal salts. Traditional indigo dyeing techniques, which include Shibori dyeing, such as tying, stitching, pole wrapping, clamping and folding, form the basis of the textile process. The practice of sustainability is an essential component of this practice and workshop series.
