88300 Object and Accessory Design 2: The Cast Object
6cp
Requisite(s): 88100 Object and Accessory Design 1: Foundations
The casting of metals and ceramics pre-dates the industrial revolution. Casting is perhaps one of the most flexible manufacturing technologies available for the production of small objects and accessories in series. This subject, the second of four in the Object and Accessory Design sub major elective, covers the forming of ceramic objects using the 'slip casting method'. Information on specific process requirements is combined with studio classes to ensure a fully integrated design process and outcome. Students undertake research into a cast piece they are interested in and proceed to the design of at least one slip cast item. Following the design process students are critiqued and then proceed after any necessary design modification to the design and manufacture of slip casting moulds and then to actual products.
