This subject considers what restrictions are placed on the content of electronic communications that can be seen or heard in Australian offices and homes. What lies behind the screen? What attempts have been made to enact laws and regulatory devices to influence that content? Do they work? If not what can be done to make them work?

This subject analyses and discusses the policies, rules and codes of conduct that influence electronic communications laws. Emphasis is placed on the regulation of the content of telephone calls, radio and television programs, and the World Wide Web. Particular emphasis is placed on the Broadcasting Services Act 1992 and the activities of the Australian Communications and Media Authority.
