Learning about intellectual property is a bit like stepping through the looking glass – suddenly everything looks different and apparently ordinary things take on a new meaning. Listening to music on your MP3 player; downloading materila from the internet; using research tools in the university library; karaoke singing; putting on a school play; designing a chair or adding a room to your house – even these everyday activities, you realise, raise intellectual property issues.

In this subject students are introduced to three of the major forms of intellectual property protection, that is:

  • copyright law and its neighbouring rights (moral rights and performers' protection)
  • designs law, and
  • the protection of confidential information.
