68513 Optics and Nanophotonics

6cp; 4hpw

Requisite(s): (68201 Physics in Action OR 68037 Physical Modelling) AND (33360c Mathematics for Physical Science OR 68038 Advanced Mathematics and Physics)

This subject builds on the foundation studies of waves, optics, and electromagnetism undertaken in introductory physics subjects. It takes advantage of the methods of vector calculus and differential equations to analyse how propagating fields interact with matter. The subject shows that field distributions at the nanoscale play an important role in many well-established and developing applications, such as infra-red absorbing window coatings and sub-wavelength lithography. Topics include: Maxwell's equations, interaction of electromagnetic waves and matter, diffraction and holography, near-field optics, superlensing and scattering by small metallic particles.
