Requisite(s): (68201 Physics in Action OR 68037 Physical Modelling) AND (33360c Mathematics for Physical Science OR 68038 Advanced Mathematics and Physics)
This subject builds upon the foundation studies of mechanics and gravitational, electric and magnetic fields undertaken in an introductory physics subject. It takes advantage of the methods of vector calculus and differential equations to analyse both how fields depend on the distribution of sources and on how particles move through a field. The subject develops the tools used in the design of technological applications of moving particles and students gain experience with software packages based on these tools. Topics include Lagrangian description of particle dynamics, analysis of orbits, calculation of fields due to charged particles and currents, motion of charged particles in electric and magnetic fields chaotic motion, and an introduction to the exciting world of elementary particles.
