An introduction to field techniques in the earth and environmental sciences. Introduction to air photographs and satellite imagery; use of these and topographic and other maps in the field. Concepts of land tenure, ethics and safety in the field. Methods of systematic study – griding, transects, maps and plans on the local scale. Basic geological mapping, stratigraphic principles, examination of landscape changes with time. As appropriate, use and development of thematic and soils maps. Much of the subject is taught during one major field camp and supported by one or more afternoons of local field work.
