8cp Graduate subject – Social Inquiry – 400 level
Professional practice in social inquiry draws heavily on advocacy and communication. This subject directly addresses the practices (and arts) of social change, exploring the strategies and resources needed to develop effective advocacy. It covers a range of issues including: lobbying and advocacy in the mainstream media; organising for grassroots advocacy; the role of alternative and social movement media; the process of advocacy across communication communities; the globalising context for advocacy and communication; the process of articulating multiple media genres and platforms; the role of storytelling and public narrative; the place of information campaigns and public research; and the role of symbolic acts and affective advocacy. The subject centres on campaign planning and strategic management. Students develop campaign strategies designed to generate consciousness and resonate conscience.
