Subject coordinator: Dr Johnson Agbinya

Engineering educators, as well as engineering employers, have long recognised the value of integrating practical experience with academic studies. This is a 0-credit-point subject that supports students while they are working in industry or the community for the purpose of gaining experience in the practice of engineering. It provides students with the opportunity to discover engineering workplace culture and to develop their basic technical skills. It is expected that students gain this level of experience early in their academic program. One semester prior to undertaking the experience students must enrol in the relevant Engineering Practice Preview subject.

Each student's experience is unique. Employer or host organisations are not expected to provide formal training although some may choose to do so. Instead students are required to become active learners and seek opportunities to fulfil the objectives of this experience module. Students are assisted in this process through engineering core and fields of practice subjects and specifically through the Engineering Practice Review subject.

Assessment: Even though this is a 0-credit-point subject, and is non-assessable per se, students must fulfil the following requirements to be eligible to enrol in and pass the Engineering Practice Review subject:

  • ensure they are enrolled in this subject to indicate to the University that they are undertaking University-related work experience
  • confirm employment arrangements and conditions with the employer; suggestions from APESMA (the Association of Professional Engineers Scientists and Managers, Australia - your union) are included on employment contracts
  • review the learning proposal in light of their current position and revise accordingly; students should have personal, technical, organisational and contextual objectives (refer to the provided guidelines for Engineering Practice Review 1
  • notify the Industry Partnering Unit (via the IPU website) of their intention to do an internship. Students must provide the Faculty with a completed Start Employment Notification form and provide evidence of employment (e.g. a Confirmation of Employment letter). The minimum period of assessable engineering experience in the subject is 22 weeks. Note, however, that the total required engineering experience is 48 weeks.
