48023 Object-oriented Programming

This subject introduces students to programming using an object-oriented (OO) methodology. The programming language which is used is Java. The topics covered are: data flow (assignment, numeric expressions, input/output); control flow (selection, repetition); OO concepts (class, object, methods, constructors, visibility modifiers, inheritance); event-driven programming (events and listeners, graphical user interface (GUI) classes, GUI building); data structures and basic algorithms (arrays, sorting and searching). On completion of the subject, students are able to:
- understand the key concepts of object-oriented programming, and
- read and write small programs in Java
Assessment: Typical assessment includes a final exam, a laboratory component and programming assignments. Lab examination and final examination (70 per cent), assignment (14 per cent), HD project (16 per cent).
