This subject aims at providing the skills necessary to evaluate the embodied energy and energy efficiency of existing construction methods, as well as introducing alternative and more energy efficient methods. It also covers the issues surrounding recycling of building materials and alternative energy sources and issues affecting the interaction between economic development and environmental protection. It includes an understanding of the importance of ecologically sustainable development and the provision of strategic advice on the most effective use of resources over a project's life cycle. Advanced selection criteria and the measurement of sustainability are discussed in the context of political, legal, ecological and societal considerations.
