This subject is one of four that together form the Architectural Practice Electives. Electives A and B examine the way in which the broader industry and social context influences the 'character' and 'form' of architectural practice. Electives C and D examine how the practice of architecture can be better facilitated through an understanding from within the profession context.
Architectural Practice A explicitly acknowledges that practice of architecture occurs within a broader industry and social context. The profession's reputation and the quality of work it produces is heavily dependent on architects valuing the relationships that exist between itself and industry professions, vocations and the wider community. Students are expected to explore ways in which practice can profit from constructively engaging with the knowledge, attitudes and skills possessed by these various groups. The adoption and adaptation of knowledge and skills can occur on practical and conceptual levels.
The many divergent workplace experiences offered in these vocations provide a unique viewpoint to assess current architectural practice. As such this subject is available to students participating in a wide range of vocations including construction, planning, property and media. The student's participation in the subject will be assessed and approved by the subject coordinator at the beginning of the semester.
