The subject offers a thematic history of modern architecture, with an emphasis on a close reading of key architectural case studies from the twentieth century. Themes are selected from the following: ideas of modernity, modernism and modernisation; ideas and practices of avant-gardism; impacts of technology; domesticity and modernism; urbanisation and urban experience; the role of different media in the development of modern architecture; critical histories and theories of modern architecture; architectural autonomy; the development of modern architecture in a geo-political context; the impact of cultural exchange; postmodernity and the critique of modernism.
