This course is not offered to international students.
This course enhances students' understanding of: the motivation for, processes in and constraints on psychological health-related research with human subjects; the brain structures, processes and phenomena that explain mental functioning and psychological disorders and management; and evidence-based methodologies for the treatment of anxiety and mood disorders. The course also aims to increase students' understanding of neurosciences, psychophysiology and research methods.
The course is designed specifically to extend graduates of the Graduate Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy (offered by the Jansen Newman Institute of Counselling and Applied Psychotherapy), so that they are research capable. Completion of the Graduate Diploma permits enrolment in the Master's and earns the student advanced standing of 48 credit points.
The course is designed to articulate with the Graduate Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy offered by the Jansen Newman Institute of Counselling and Applied Psychotherapy. If students do not have this qualification, they can apply for prior learning consideration.
Students must complete the Graduate Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy at the Jansen Newman Institute (JNI) or have an equivalent qualification (including a required number of clinical hours). Non-JNI graduates have their qualifications assessed on a case-by-case basis.
If students have not completed the Jansen Newman Institute of Councelling and Applied Psychotheraphy's Graduate Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy, they can apply for prior learning consideration.
This course may be completed in a minimum of one year of part-time study. Students generally complete two 6-credit-point subjects, plus the required clinical practice component, per semester.
The teaching and learning approach used within the Psychology and Psychotherapy subjects is based around problem-oriented and resource-based learning. A problem-oriented approach involves some formalised content presentation, but there is a focus on using problems (from presented case studies and the students' clinical practice experiences) as the vehicle to apply this. A problem-oriented approach is consistent with the area where developing knowledge and understanding from case studies is an important ability. This is expected to promote student collaboration and identify best practice.
The learning environment also allows for resource-based learning. Resource-based learning is the achievement of both subject and information literacy objectives through exposure to and practice with diverse resources. Learners have the opportunity to engage with aspects of the subjects in their own time and location.
In all subjects, except clinical practice, students receive a numerical mark for an assessment item. The marks for these assessment items are then summed and normalised to give a mark for the subject. All assessment within the course conforms to the Assessment Guidelines (UTS, 1998). The approach to assessment uses various media including verbal, written and electronic communication. Being an industry-relevant course set in a professional context, there is an emphasis on producing professional style reports. This is used to model professional practice and allow attributes to be embedded in a disciplinary-relevant context.
Students who fail two subjects, or fail one subject twice, are asked to show cause why they should not be excluded from the course.
The requirement for a minimum of 50 hours of clinical experience during the Master's year ensures students' experience is coherent with their previous learning in the discipline.
The clinical practice component of this course may be satisfied over one, two or three semesters and is a necessary requirement for course completion and graduation.
