Overview

Research management, innovation and commercialisation are key skills for researchers and research administrators. This course is designed to equip those who lead the research process or those with a management dimension to their research activity with the essential knowledge and skills to fulfil their role. It is particularly suitable for those currently enrolled in a higher degree by research. This online course has been developed in cooperation with the Australian Technology Network partners: Curtin University of Technology; the University of South Australia; the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology; the Queensland University of Technology; and the University of Technology, Sydney.

A limited number of Commercialisation Training Scheme scholarships to undertake this course are available for currently enrolled research students who meet certain criteria.

Course aims

The course aims to develop in graduates the capacity to:

  • engage with issues concerning the nature, purpose and impact of research at global, national and local levels and the role of public policy in framing research effort
  • develop the research capabilities of individuals, work groups and organisations
  • lead or provide guidance to a research team in framing and managing a research project
  • identify and manage the risks associated with research, particularly the ethical and safety issues pertinent to the conduct of research
  • understand and apply the process of research commercialisation and other forms of knowledge transfer
  • gain knowledge and practical skills in research and research commercialisation funding, and
  • critically evaluate research proposals and provide advice and feedback to applicants.

Graduates have heightened skills and understanding of aspects of research governance, project delivery, advocacy and knowledge transfer.

Career options

This course is designed for those who are engaged in research careers in one or more capacities; conducting funded research projects; leading a team of researchers; preparing research grant applications; supervising students undertaking research degrees; providing organisational support for funded research projects; as well as for those contributing to broader strategic and policy initiatives relating to research and particularly its commercialisation.

Course duration and attendance

This course is offered on a one semester, full-time basis equivalent study, but students can complete the course over a longer period of time. All subjects are offered online only. Students require regular and reliable Internet access.

Course structure

The course comprises 24 credit points, made up of one compulsory subject and three electives chosen from a pool of four subjects.
