Overview

This course is designed for graduates and experienced professionals who want to upgrade their qualifications and skills and keep pace with client and employer expectations and industry change.

The UTS Project Management program is recognised as a worldwide leader in Project Management education. It is presented by internationally recognised scholars and practitioners in the field of Project Management, many of whom visit UTS from overseas especially to teach in our courses.

The learning program emphasises the systemic and holistic nature of project management, with particular emphasis on the management of complex projects within ambiguous and high-risk organisational environments.

Delivered through intensive workshops, which include simulations and case studies, together with work-related assignments, the courses in this program cover management of projects, program and portfolio management and organisational aspects of project management.

Course aims

This program provides a comprehensive grounding in both the underlying principles and practical aspects of project, program and portfolio management.

The Project Management program is generic. Students come from many discipline backgrounds, ranging from IT, banking and finance, health and local government to construction and engineering.

Career options

Project management is one of the fastest growing of the global professional disciplines. Career options include positions in banking and finance, construction and engineering, health, IT and local government, both locally and internationally.

Articulation

This course is part of an articulated program comprising the Graduate Certificate in Project Management (C11005), the Graduate Diploma in Project Management (C07004), the Master of Project Management, and the Master of Business Administration (Project Management major) (C04014). Each stage is self-contained and can be undertaken through part-time or full-time study.

The Graduate Diploma is offered as an exit point for students who do not wish to go on to complete the Master's degree but who otherwise finish with 48 credit points. Direct entry to the Graduate Diploma is not available.

Articulation from the Graduate Certificate to the Master of Project Management is allowed with the approval of the Director of Program provided students already hold a Bachelor's degree.

Students articulating from the Master of Project Management to the MBA (Project Management major) receive exemptions and need only to complete the business core units (48 credit points) to complete the MBA.

Additional admission requirements

Applicants must:

  • hold a Bachelor's degree, or
  • complete the Graduate Certificate/Master's qualifying program, or
  • have both 10 years' relevant professional work experience and a recognised professional qualification.

All applicants must have at least six months' work experience.

Additional recognition of prior learning

Exemptions of up to 24 credit points may be given for equivalent prior learning (excluding the Master's qualifying program). Applicants with a cognate four-year degree may be given up to 24 credit points of exemptions.

Course duration and attendance

The Master of Project Management is offered on a one-and-a-half-year, full-time, or three-year, part-time basis. Because the intensive workshops are widely spaced throughout the year, many students choose to accelerate the part-time Master's program and complete it within two years.

Course structure

Students choose 72 credit points from a list of compulsory and elective subjects.
