A limited number of places are offered each year to suitably qualified students to follow a program of study leading to this award. This degree is for graduates seeking to extend and deepen their knowledge by undertaking an appropriate research investigation under professional supervision by academic staff of the Faculty.
The Faculty is known for offering high-quality design education. Research students have access to academic design expertise.
The Faculty has developed a New Media Design in Museum and Interpretive Environments Specialisation with the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney.
Students research and develop their ideas across one or more research areas in direct relationship to a Powerhouse Museum project, and are co-supervised by an expert from the Museum. Curators form an integral part of the teaching and learning experience. This multidisciplinary design, research and curatorial environment is designed to make this degree a successful vehicle for the advancement of knowledge and curatorial practice in the field of interface and interactive narrative systems. It provides students with a unique structure to develop a project in the area of interface and interactive narrative systems for public and museum displays.
It is the only postgraduate research specialisation in Australia dedicated to the research and development of interface and narrative systems in public exhibition spaces (gallery and online).
Career options include positions in design criticism, design exhibition curation or design research.
This course can articulate into a PhD program of advanced research.
The maximum course duration is two years of full-time, or three years of part-time study.
The requirement of this degree is the preparation of a thesis which is judged by its examiners to be a distinct contribution to the knowledge of the subject. The format of the body of work and the length of the written dissertation are determined after discussion with Faculty staff and must be approved by the Graduate Studies Committee.
Candidates may be required first to undertake coursework subjects in research methodology, to gain experience with research methods and skills. They are also required to present papers, which form part of the preparation of their thesis, at the Faculty Postgraduate Seminars.
