This subject is designed for students at the 'upper basic' level of competence in Italian language and culture. It builds on the basic linguistic and cultural capabilities and general language learning strategies acquired through prior exposure to Italian language and culture or through Italian 1. Upon successful completion of the subject, students are able to understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance, in speech as well as writing. They are able to communicate in simple and routine tasks, describe in simple terms aspects of their background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need, write short, simple notes, personal letters and messages; and recognise the importance of communicating in a culturally appropriate manner.

Assessment: This subject has a combination of continuous assessment and final examinations for speaking, listening, reading and writing. Further details are available in the subject outline, distributed in class during the first week of teaching.
