This is a broad subject that examines the themes of social change, modernity and identity within the sociopolitical and economic context of Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. Issues explored include nationalism and transnationalism; legacies of colonialism; migration patterns in the context of regional interrelationships; beliefs about and practices of women in the region; the commodification of culture; increasing urbanization; the growing impact of tourism; new creative forms in the arts; and the ways in which religion and social practice intersect. The subject requires no prior knowledge of Indonesia, Malaysia or Thailand.

Assessment: Assessment tasks involve the writing of essays.
