This subject provides understanding of marine ecosystem structure (all marine ecosystems are ultimately dependent upon primary production). Specifically, it provides a foundation in assessing and understanding the process of photosynthesis of marine plant systems. Much of the subject is taught in block mode at Heron Island in April, with some limited activities based in Sydney.

Enrolment in the subject is limited by the availability of space at the Heron Island Research Station and preference is given to students in the Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology.

Additional subject costs: The five-day excursion to Heron Island costs approximately $600, with additional costs of return airfare to Gladstone. Check the Department of Environmental Sciences website for details at:

This subject alternates with 91157 Marine Community Ecology and is offered every second year in Autumn semester.
