This subject addresses the current issues in ecosystem protection and examines the contribution of science in the formulation and development of regulatory guidelines and environmental law and policies. Topices include natural variability and stress responses in living organisms and ecosystems; ecological assessment via snapshot or long-term studies; integration of field and laboratory assessment of impacts; the use of early warning biomarkers of environmental degradation; impacts of pollution on genetic diversity; rehabilitation of contaminated sites, including bioremediation; the use of alternatives to pesticides; and life cycle effects of pollutants. Case studies are used to demonstrate the integration of science in ecological/environmental risk assessment and environmental quality guidelines and the application of adaptive management strategies. Short excursions around Sydney are included.
