Topics covered in this subject include: the principles and practice of scientific experimentation, with particular emphasis on biology; the essential steps in experimental design and analysis, and their roles; the source of experimental variability and the ways of effectively dealing with them; environmental sampling procedures and designs; the logic of experimental and statistical hypothesis testing; the practical uses and limitations of statistical tests in biology; and techniques for analysing multivariate data, with emphasis on the pattern-analysis methods of ordination and clustering.
